The Uncanny Counter returns for a second season with a far more intriguing premise this July. Here’s what we know so far.

Korean dramas have taken the movie and television industry by storm in recent years, and while they were once synonymous with romance stories, that has changed. Despite Korea’s long-standing reputation as home to some of the world’s finest cinema, the success of television shows like Stranger, Signal, K2, and Voice has repeatedly proven that the industry can produce masterpieces even on the small screen. The Uncanny Counter is one such Korean drama that has garnered enormous popularity in recent years.

The Uncanny Counter is a South Korean television series based on a popular webtoon by Jang Yin. The drama’s first season aired from November 2020 to January 2021 before concluding with 16 episodes and an emotional and beautiful climax for fans who had been on the journey for three months.

With the series renewed for a second season, fans were eager to see what So Mun (Cho Byeong Kyu) and the other Counters would be getting up to. With that in mind, let’s run down all the information we have so far concerning season two of The Uncanny Counter.

The Uncanny Counter Season 2: The Plot

It’s been three years since the first season was released, and while many prefer re-watching it before moving on to the second season, let’s take a brief look at what happened during season one.

The story takes place in a fictional South Korean world where evil spirits from the afterlife take over humans for the purpose of eternal existence. To keep the world balanced, individuals who have nothing to lose or have been on the verge of death have become Counters tasked with preventing these spirits from terrorizing the denizens any further.

So Mun, who developed a disability as a child following a mysterious accident that also took his parents away, was chosen by a counter spirit whose host died fighting an evil spirit. So Mun embarks on a quest to fend off these dreadful spirits with Ga Mo Tak, a former police officer turned Counter, Do Ha Na, skilled in sensing evil spirits from hundreds of meters away, and Chu Mae Ok, the group’s anchor, and healer. So Mun discovered the mystery surrounding his parents’ deaths and even met them after rescuing them from the clutches of a vile spirit that has survived since the occurrence.

Overall, the ending was beautiful, and in the first season’s climactic episode, we witness the Counters preparing to expand their network throughout South Korea. Although there is no official trailer for the series yet, it will feature an entirely new story with few ties to the previous season’s events other than the characters and the basic premise. As a result, we should expect to see more Counters from around the world as well as more involvement from So Mun and the rest of the group.

The Uncanny Counter Season 2: The Cast & Crew

Most of the original cast members will return for season two of The Uncanny Counter, with a few new faces joining the ensemble. Cho Byeong Gyu portrays So Mun, the series’ main protagonist, who becomes the bridge between spirits and the afterlife towards the end of the first season. The actor made his screen debut in 2015 with the drama Who Are You: School 2015, and he has since been in a number of notable films and television shows, including Secret, Miss & Mrs. Cops, SKY Castle, and Arthdal Chronicles.

In addition, he won “Best New Actor” at the SBS Drama Awards in 2020 for his appearances in SKY Castle and Hot Stove League. In the drama, Kim Se Jeong plays Do Ha Na, who is supposed to be the main character’s love interest, though the series has yet to confirm this. The actress is among the most well-known Korean female performers, thanks to her roles in Business Proposal, Busted!, and Today’s Webtoon.

The rest of the main cast will return for the second season, including Yoon Joon Sang as Ga Mo Tak (Alchemy of Souls), Yeom Hye Ran as Chu Me Ok (The Glory), and Ahn Suk Hwan as Choi Jang Mool (Rookie Cops). The series will see the addition of a few other supporting cast members, including Yoo In Soo (All of Us Are Dead), Jin Seon Kyu (Vincenzo), Kim Hi Eo Ra (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), and Kang Ki Young (Tunnel).

Yoo Seon Dang, the well-known screenwriter and filmmaker who worked on the first season of The Uncanny Counter, will return to direct the second season. Other than The Uncanny Counter, his additional famous works include Vampire Prosecutor 2, Shoot My Heart, and Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp. Kim Sae Bom and Yeo Ji Na will also return as screenwriters for the second season, just as they did for the first.

While the former is most recognized for her work on Bad and Crazy, the latter has worked on a variety of popular dramas such as Il Mare, Reversal of Fortune, and The Man Who Can’t Get Married. Se Hui Lee and Heon Ju Park produced the series, with Sun Tae Kim serving as executive producer.

The Uncanny Counter Season 2: Release Date

The second season of the series titled “The Uncanny Counter Season 2: Counter Punch” will premiere on Netflix on July 29, 2023, with 12 episodes airing until September 3, 2023.
