Legendary director, Tim Burton, who directed the first half of Wednesday season 1, just shared a major update about his involvement in Wednesday season 2. It’s great news for those who love Burton’s work and the first season of Wednesday.

There are a lot of familiar faces also returning the new season. We also know Jenna Ortega is returning as Wednesday Addams in Wednesday season 2, which is one of the most highly anticipated Netflix original shows expected to return.

Wednesday is officially one of the biggest Netflix shows of all time, and from the final moments of the first season, a second season looked like it was definitely going to happen on Netflix. Then, fans didn’t hear anything for several months, but that all changed with recent developments in 2023.

Fans fell in love with Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams, and now, they can’t wait to see what’s new about season 2. To help fans find the most up-to-date information about the new season, we shared everything we know so far about the new season.

We’ll update this story as Netflix shares more information about Wednesday season 2. The latest update was made on Monday, Sept. 18, 2023.

Wednesday season 2 is definitely happening

After several months of waiting with very little news about Wednesday season 2, Netflix finally renewed the hit show in early January 2023.

If any Netflix show were a slam dunk to be renewed, Wednesday was that show. The show ranks No. 2 behind Stranger Things season 4 as the most popular Netflix US release of all time. It’s No. 3 behind Squid Game and Stranger Things season 4 on the list of the most-watched Netflix releases of all time. Netflix was not going to cancel a show that successful.

Wednesday season 2 has not started filming yet

Unfortunately, we’re in for a long wait until Wednesday season 2. As of September 2023, production has not started on the new season yet.

While appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in March 2023, Jenna Ortega said the writers’ room had just been put together and they were talking about where the season would go. In an interview with Glamour in April 2023, the actress spoke about her summer plans and teased that she might be busy working on the series:

According to reports, the cast and crew started production on the first season in the fall of 2021 and wrapped in the spring of 2022 in Romania. The season was released about seven to eight months after production ended, so that was basically the timeline we were looking at for Wednesday season 2.

Unfortunately, that timeline will likely be different this time around because of the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes. We know many Netflix shows have either been shut down or delayed, including Stranger Things, and now that production cannot begin on Wednesday, we assume the same can be said for the show too.

Production was reportedly going to begin on Wednesday season 2 sometime in the fall of 2023, which could have helped set up a fall 2024 release date, but it’s fall 2023 now, and production still hasn’t started.

Hopefully, the season 2 filming schedule will be a little easier for Ortega, who revealed to Variety that she was “hysterically crying” on FaceTime throughout the exhausting production of season 1.

“I did not get any sleep. I pulled my hair out,” Ortega said. “There’s so many FaceTime calls that my dad answered of me hysterically crying.”

Tim Burton is returning for Wednesday season 2

In September 2023, Tim Burton, who directed the first four episodes of the first season of Wednesday, confirmed he would return in some capacity for Wednesday season 2 in an interview with BFI.

Burton didn’t share many details because the WGA and SAG are on strike, but we should learn more about his role when the AMPTP offers the WGA and SAG unions deals they can accept.

Will the WGA and SAG strikes delay Wednesday season 2?

Though it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely that Wednesday season 2 will be delayed because of the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes. Even if the writers’ room began before the writers’ strike started in May 2023, we don’t know if the scripts are complete. And, even if the scripts are done, the show cannot begin filming until the actors’ strike is over.

On top of the ongoing strikes, Wednesday is a series with a big cast that films in Romania. It’s a big production, and all of that must be taken into account.

There were reports that Wednesday season 2 was eyeing a fall 2023 start to filming, but that obviously will not happen with the writer and actors on strike.

Hopefully, Netflix and the AMPTP will offer what the writers and actors are asking for and everything else gets rolling at some point this year.

Has Netflix announced the Wednesday season 2 release date yet?

As of September 2023, there is no release date for Wednesday season 2, but we have some bad news about Wednesday season 2. It needs to start filming soon, or we won’t see this season until 2025. That falls squarely on the shoulders of the AMPTP bringing the WGA and SAG members back to work. Until that happens, Wednesday season 2 will continue to be delayed.

We know that Wednesday season 2 is not coming in 2023. We’ve known that since the second season was renewed in early 2023. The first season came out at the end of 2022, so it would make sense why fans think Wednesday season 2 could be released in 202. Considering nothing has been filmed, there’s no way that’s happening.

If the writers’ and actors’ strikes come to a close sometime this year, we hope filming can begin on Wednesday season 2 soon after. Many Netflix shows take about a year from the start of production until the release, so depending on the schedule for Wednesday, we could see the second installment come out at the end of 2024. But, as the strikes continue, it’s looking more like a 2025 release date is likely.

Release Prediction: Late 2024 or early 2025

Wednesday season 2 cast

Several cast members and creators have confirmed many of the returnees for the new season of the series. We shared who is expected to be back for Wednesday season 2:

  • Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
  • Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
  • Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
  • Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
  • Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
  • Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
  • Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
  • Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems
  • Jamie McShane as Sheriff Galpin
  • Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay

There are a few Wednesday characters who won’t be back for season 2. It’s unclear if Gwendoline Christie will be back. Her character, Principal Weems, was killed in the finale, so it’s TBD if she’ll be back. We sure hope Christie will be involved with season 2! Christina Ricci, who played Laurel Gates/Marilyn Thornhill, is not expected to be back for season 2.

There are also some rumors that Lady Gaga will join the cast for season 2, but that has not been confirmed. Such a huge casting would be major, major news. We’ll just have to wait and see if Netflix is able to pull off something like that!

It also appears that there are some conversations to get Christopher Lloyd involved for season 2. Lloyd originally played Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. Here’s what Lloyd told Yahoo! Entertainment:

“I’ve heard rumors trickling down that I might be coming on. I’m not sure how, but I think Ortega is wonderful.”

Is Percy Hynes White in Wednesday season 2?

Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault

Actor Percy Hynes White, who plays Xavier on Wednesday, was in the headlines earlier this year after being accused of sexual assault. White, 21, was called out by the allegations in January, when a Twitter user said they were assaulted at a party the actor was hosting in Toronto, along with other women. In response to the claims, White provided a statement months later in June via his Instagram Story:
