The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart (2023)
A nationwide manhunt for Hank Venture leads to untold dangers and unexpected revelations, while The Monarch is literally out for Dr Venture’s blood. An imposing evil from the past reemerges to wreak havoc on the Ventures, The Guild, and even the Monarch marriage-it will take friends and foes alike to restore the Ventures’ world to order… or end it once and for all.
The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart is a 2023 American direct-to-video adult animated science fiction action adventure film based on the Adult Swim animated series The Venture Bros., where it will serve as the series finale. The film is directed and co-written by the series creator Jackson Publick and writer Doc Hammer, who serves as the film’s executive producers and features the voices of the show’s returning principal cast, James Urbaniak, Patrick Warburton, Michael Sinterniklaas, Publick and Hammer. The film centers on a nationwide manhunt for Hank Venture, which leads to a coming darkness from the past that involves the Venture Family, the Guild, and the Monarch themselves.
Beginning shortly after the events of The Saphrax Protocol, Team Venture is on the search for Hank, who has disappeared from his hospital bed. Aided by a team of O.S.I. agents, Brock tracks the location of Hank’s V-Phone to an alley in Queens. Shortly after discovering that Hank has given away his phone and iconic Ven-Tech jacket, Brock and the O.S.I. agents are called to address an unsanctioned arching several blocks away. At Ven-Tech Tower, Councilwoman Dr. Mrs. the Monarch attempts to collect a cheek swab from Rusty to further analyze his DNA, but upon Rusty’s refusal, Sheila absconds with his coffee mug, intending to use his residual saliva for the genetic assay.
The Monarch reels from unfortunate news: following the Guild’s discovery of his blood relation to Rusty, he is unable to arch his nemesis, despite his recent “tenning,” his formal recognition of his villainous prowess by the Guild of Calamitous Intent. When Dr. Mrs. the Monarch receives word of the unsanctioned arching, she leaves the Monarch and Henchman #21, Gary, to take the PATH Train home.
Billy Quizboy informs Dr. Venture that their soon-to-launch virtual assistant the H.E.L.P.eR. Pod, a smart device styled after the original H.E.L.P.eR. model robot and in reference to the real-world Alexa, has quite the killer flaw – while playing music, it levitates, and crashes when the audio feed is turned off. Fearing liability from consumer injury, Billy vehemently cautions that they delay the launch until the issue is resolved.
While waiting for a train to take he and the Monarch home, Gary takes notice of a well-dressed villainess and introduces himself. Shortly afterwards, the villainess reveals herself to be Mantilla: founder of the new archvillain collective A.R.C.H., and invites the Monarch and Gary to contact her. Gary is stunned following a flashy exit, and the Monarch’s admission that they used to date, before he met his wife.
In an emergency meeting of the Guild Council, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch reviews forensics from the arching, and identify the illicit antagonist as Brick Frog, a perennially low-ranking villain who recently quit the Guild. The Council notes the discrepancy between his historical competency and capacity for villainy, and forms a subcommittee led by Red Death and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch to investigate further.
Dean, grief-stricken over the disappearance of Hank, his twin’s near-fatal injury, and discovery of his infidelity with his girlfriend Sirena, is desperate to find Hank. Upon hearing that O.S.I. has called off the search due to Hank’s apparently voluntary disappearance, Dean seeks support from Dr. Orpheus. Dean offers Hank’s characteristic kerchief to Orpheus to track him, though Orpheus ultimately utilizes the remorse contained within his letter to his brother, and receives a vision of Hank’s location. The vision proves unclear, as it includes disparate visual information from Hank’s past, present, and potential futures, but provides them with enough information to start the search.
Meanwhile, in a sleeper car Hank recounts the journey of the past few days from his perspective, and his deep urge to learn more about himself. He attempts to leave New York City via boat, but discovers that he has snuck onto a tour boat, and takes the time to reflect on this as a metaphor for his life writ large; he remains stuck in a never-ending cycle of idealized projections of himself, and romantic failures. Following his knowledge of fictional tropes, he soon jumps aboard a train, runs afoul of several indigents aboard the same boxcar, then books a sleeper car to Denver. Aboard the car, Hank consults with several of his past alternate identities: villain Enrico Matassa, the Detective, Batman, and henchman Russian Guyovitch.
In the Egg Sac, the Monarch and Gary discuss whether to take Mantilla up on her offer. When Gary scans the QR code on the back of her business card, he is horrified by the size of its data package and its invasiveness. Mantilla arrives and offers A.R.C.H.’s services.
At the crime scene left by Brick Frog, Shore Leave reviews key details with Dr. Mrs. the Monarch. Brick Frog has finally slain his longtime nemesis, Dr. Dale, and destroyed the evidence of Dale’s soon-to-be-unveiled indestructible masonry material. Red Death surreptitiously sneaks away with a phone from one of the deceased A.R.C.H. members, as well as their hand for any fingerprint screenlock.
Mantilla offers the Monarch and Gary a tour of A.R.C.H. – a startup villainy organization dedicated to leveraging their state-of-the-art technology to supply their members with the means to destroy their protagonist rivals. The Monarch and Gary quickly agree to use their services.
Hank arrives at the former Venture compound. Initially depressed by the razing of the site, he fantasizes about his many memories on the campus grounds, and visualizes several key events from past seasons in a panorama, ending in a flashbulb memory of his time in his “Coma World,” and the Action Man telling him his mother is Bobbi St. Simone. Dermott soon discovers Hank and invites him back to his home. With Hank, they research Bobbi and note that she was a small-time actress in the late 1960s, and appears to run an animal sanctuary for creatures modified by superscientists and supervillains close to the Venture Compound.
Jefferson, Dr. Orpheus, and Dean arrive in Chicago shortly after dusk. Jefferson chastises Dean for being the other man to his own twin, then drives the trio to his former lodgings at a small-time protagonists’ collective in an abandoned factory. Shortly before dawn, Dr. Orpheus awakens from his dream in which he watched Hank’s movements. They are soon attacked by a group of Black vampires self-stylized the Blood Brothers. Though Jefferson is able to repel them and aid their escape, Dean is apparently bitten in the ensuing fracas; he notices two bite marks on his neck.
The Monarch and Gary, now outfitted with A.R.C.H.-provided tech, begin a new arching of Ven-Tech Industries. After using a tank-mounted laser that changes the company’s logo on the building to the Monarch’s own sigil, the two make their way inside. A hidden Mantilla watches the proceedings, and recalls their A.R.C.H. tank and activates all H.E.L.P.eR. Pods. As the Pods levitate throughout the building, their combined efforts causes Ven-Tech Tower to lift off the ground and begin to move skyward.
