Man City 7-0 RB Leipzig LIVE! Haaland five goals – Champions League result, match stream and latest reaction
Erling Haaland scores FIVE goals, including first-half hat-trick, against RB Leipzig as he beats Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe to Champions League landmark.
Erling Haaland is well on the way to becoming a contender to be named football’s GOAT.
The Norwegian striker joined Manchester City last summer and had already bagged 34 goals in 35 games before RB Leipzig came to town in the Champions League.
Against the German side, Haaland bagged an early brace inside a minute, before getting his hat-trick just before half-time to put City firmly in control of the last 16 tie – which was his fifth treble of the season so far and his second in the Champions League.
His second effort was a landmark strike, with Haaland now having scoring 31 goals in the Champions League.
Having reached the 30-goal milestone after just 25 games, the 22-year-old becomes the youngest player to reach that tally.
Not only that, but Haaland is also the fastest player ever to reach 30 goals in Europe’s biggest competition – quicker than Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.
He wasn’t done there as he netted twice more inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Ilkay Gundogan scored the other goal as City romped to a 6-0 lead. Haaland was then substituted in the 62nd minute, much to the relief of everyone associated with Leipzig.
Those efforts mean that the striker now has ten goals against Leipzig, more than any other player in world football has managed.
However, Haaland has some way to go before he can get near the top of the Champions League’s all-time scoring chart.
The striker would need to surpass Andriy Shevchenko’s total of 48 to break into the competition’s top ten scorers ever.
If he’s to get into the top three he’ll need to surpass Robert Lewandowski’s total of 91, although the Barcelona star will be hoping to add to that before he hangs up his boots.
Should Haaland want to become the Champions League’s all-time top scorer, he’ll need to reach 140 goals, the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo following prolific form with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus
