Match report as second-half goals from Fred and Antony complete Manchester United comeback against Barcelona. Erik ten Hag’s team are through to the last 16 of the Europa League after 2-1 win at Old Trafford secures 4-3 aggregate win

The match between Manchester United & FC Barca started with full attacking forces.

You can see De Jong has played at centre-back before. His made a couple of impressive recoveries in his own third and if he was subdued last week he has been superb tonight.

United have been too naive with their game management. The referee has been bad but they have got to be better than allowing him to dictate their level of performance. They’ve not been streetwise in a few key incidents tonight.

Weghorst, having done nothing in attack, now gives away a free-kick near the corner of the United box.

Frenkie de Jong clips the ball into the area but Casemiro nods it behind for a corner.

Man Utd get away with one. David De Gea gives the ball away to Sergi Roberto who takes it to the edge of the six-yard box.

Casemiro comes flying in from the left and tackles him before the ball comes to Franck Kessie. He shoots but Casemiro recovers to block that effort too.

Raphinha can hit one but his effort from the edge of the box was never going to trouble De Gea.

This line up has not worked for United, despite the bright start, and changed are needed.

Manchester United have lost their way in this half especially since conceding. Whatever the plan was to get Wout Weghorst and Marcus Rashford into the game, it’s not really working.

Robert Lewandowski’s early penalty had left Erik ten Hag’s team with work to do but his half-time change turned the game with second-half goals from Fred and substitute Antony enough to take United through to the round of 16 at the expense of Xavi’s Barca.

It was a comeback that had not looked likely at the interval but instead made it a night to remember, a huge moment for Antony and for Ten Hag’s improving team. They go into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final still chasing glory in four different competitions.

Manchester United now switch their attentions to Wembley, where they take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, live on Sky Sports; kick-off 4.30pm. Erik ten Hag’s side then host West Ham in the FA Cup on Wednesday; kick-off 7.45pm.
