The group G third round of Qatar 2022 World Cup between Serbia & Switzerland started with full attacking forces.

Switzerland secured their spot in the 2022 World Cup Round of 16 as they beat Serbia 3-2 in a thrilling finale to Group G.

Both sides turned in their best 45 minutes of the competition thus far in the first half, as goals from Xherdan Shaqiri, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dusan Vlahovic and Breel Embolo tied the contest at 2-2 at the break.

However, the tempo dropped after the restart, allowing Remo Freuler’s smart finish to give the Swiss the edge in the closing stages.

Murat Yakin’s side had to dig deep to get over the line but sealed progression in second place behind Brazil to set up a meeting with Portugal in the knockout

Switzerland booked their place in the World Cup knockout stages with a 3-2 victory, but only after suffering a huge scare from Serbia in an epic four-goal first-half.

Xherdan Shaqiri gave Switzerland the lead with a deflected shot in the 20th minute but Serbia, who had been the better team, equalised through a trademark Aleksandar Mitrovic header and then sensationally led when Dusan Vlahovic found the bottom corner to momentarily move them second in Group G.

However, Switzerland hit-back through Breel Embolo in the final minute of a thrilling first half and regained the lead early in the second period from a wonderful team goal, rounded off by Remo Freuler.

Switzerland resolutely saw out the victory to leave Serbia bottom with only one point although the match was marred by reports of a FIFA announcement inside Stadium 974 which asked fans to stop “discriminatory shouts and gestures.

The Swiss (6 points, +1 GD) finish 2nd in Group G, joining winners Brazil (6 points, +2 GD) in the round of 16 next week. Serbia (1) go home bottom of the group, having taken their only point off 3rd-place Cameroon (4).

Xherdan Shaqiri opened the scoring in the 20th minute, when he found just enough space (and a helpful deflection) after Serbia failed to clear the ball out of their penalty area. Shaqiri lurked at the back post and quickly cut inside onto his left foot when the ball fell to him, securing a brilliant piece of footballing trivia in the process.

The lead lasted only six minutes, though, and it was Aleksandar Mitrovic who pulled Serbia level with a fantastic header after making the long run across the face of goal to the near post. The equalizer breathed new life into Serbia, who went ahead on 35 minutes as Dusan Vlahovic neatly tucked a slow roller inside the far post.
