The group D third round of Qatar 2022 World Cup between Wales & England started with full attacking forces.

The Socceroos have claimed an incredible 1-0 win over world No. 10 Denmark to secure a place in the World Cup Round of 16 in Qatar.

Denmark dominated the first half and fashioned a series of chances, but were repeatedly denied by desperate defending from the Australians.

Then veteran forward Mat Leckie struck his first-ever World Cup goal, clinically finishing a brilliant end-to-end counter-attack in the 60th minute.

The Australians desperately repelled Danish attack after attack in an excruciatingly tense final half-hour – especially since Group D rivals Tunisia scored against France two minutes before Leckie’s strike, meaning the Socceroos had to beat Denmark (rather than draw) to qualify.

Having beaten Tunisia 1-0 in their previous game, it also meant the Socceroos secured back-to-back World Cup wins for the first time in history – and their highest-ever points tally in a group stage.

Having finished second in Group D behind France (who were defeated by Tunisia this morning), the Socceroos will now face the winner of Group C.

That will be decided when Poland play Argentina and Saudi Arabia face Mexico at 6am AEDT. Currently, Poland sit atop the group ahead of Argentina.

World No. 10 Denmark dominated large portions the match before the Socceroos’ 60th-minute strike, controlling the ball and creating a series of chances.

“First 26 minutes was awful really,” Craig Foster said at halftime on SBS.

“Sometimes you have to survive and suffer in football matches and they did that,” he added.

Despite being under extreme pressure and often giving away possession cheaply, the Australians did however create a handful of opportunities on the counter-attack – the exact situation that finally broke the deadlock in the second half.

In a lightning-quick surge, the Socceroos took the ball the length of the field as Leckie raced onto a Riley McGree ball from the left wing, before turning Danish defender Joakim Maehle inside out on the edge of the area.

Leckie then finished clinically into the bottom corner, igniting raucous celebrations. It was his 14th goal in the green and gold, but first in his three World Cups.

Leckie told SBS he was feeling: “Proud, exhausted, everything. It’s hard to describe the emotions right now. We always knew we could do it. We believed.”

Denmark pushed forward after the opening goal and continued to create chances in the final half-hour.

Australian hearts were in mouths when Kasper Dolberg went down in the box in the 71st minute under pressure from Harry Souttar – raising serious fears of a penalty.

But Dolberg was called back for a tight off-side as he raced to get on the end of a cross.

Australia continued to defend with desperation and tenacity as Denmark poured forwards, with even goalkeeper Kasper Schmeicel pushing forward in the dying minutes.

Denmark striker Cornelius headed over the crossbar in the final minute of stoppage time from a corner kick, before Australia exploded in ecstasy at the full-time whistle.

Leckie added: “That last 15, 20 minutes, we battled to the end. It didn’t matter what they threw at us. We weren’t conceding.”

Denmark finished with six corners to Australia’s two, and had more than double the number of passes (664 to 304), as well as over two-thirds of possession.
