The artist’s real name is Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, but he is best known in the music industry by his stage name Oxlade. What is perhaps less known to his fans is that he began his musical journey in church at the age of 10. Such was his talent that at barely ten years old, he became a junior choir leader in church. Upon his transition from gospel to secular music, Oxlade received harsh criticism from his uncles. However, this did not deter his dream to venture into the secular music industry.

While in secondary school as well as in his two years in university, Oxlade’s love for music continued to grow. When he chose to drop out of university to pursue his career, the decision did not go down well with his father, who stopped catering to his needs.

 

Oxlade’s break in the music industry came when fellow artist Blaqbonez heard his single Sour and collaborated with him on the hit track Mamiwota. He later featured on Fireboy DML’s hit single Sing. This one was particularly important as it caught the attention of world-renowned singer Davido.

On March 27th, 2020 Oxlade dropped a six-track EP that was produced mainly by Spax the Producer. One of the tracks in the EP, Tables Turn, features British Nigerian artist Moelogo. Other great songs on the EP include O2, Away, Hold On, Kokose, and Weakness.

The release of Oxygen The EP was followed by the release of an album titled Oxygen. While the singer generally keeps his personal life away from the public eye, he mentioned that Oxygen’s release was inspired by his break up from the then Oxlade girlfriend. The latter left him just before he hit the stage with Wizkid at the O2 arena in London.

Oxygen is a testament to why so many people have fallen deeply in love with afrobeat music. The tracks feature smooth vocals, and groovy harmonies will have you in your feelings, chasing your dreams, and dancing till your feet are sore.

Away, the first track off the album with a video is beautifully scripted and shot in the coastal town of Cape Coast in Ghana. The song revolves around Oxlade waiting for his lady love to join him as he whisks her away on a trip and in love with her parents looking on. Oxlade has received much encouragement from the Nigerian music icon, Davido, via social media. According to Oxlade, Davido reached out to him at the very point he was about to give up.
