Masekela was one of the first artists to bring South African jazz to the United States, releasing Trumpet African in 1962. His breakthrough album is titled “The Americanization of Ooga Booga,” where among original tunes he covered Herbie Hancock’s Cantaloupe Island.
Masekela is an underrated artist who had a significant influence on the direction of jazz in the 1960’s. He continues to compile his vast experience and influences into marvelous music and remains active in today’s music scene. HM brought South African jazz to the world and in doing so made it a happier place.
It is a lesser world without him, but his music is a treasure to us all. Rest in Peace, brother.
