#GoldenGlobes: Oprah Winfrey Becomes First Black Woman To Win Cecil B. de Mille Award

United States actress, mogul and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey has won the 2018 Cecil B DeMille award at the 75th Golden Globes, becoming the first black woman to win the accolade.

Winfrey won in recognition of her “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” which the iconic television host and actress certainly has made.

In December 2017, Meher Tatna, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes for the Globes, declared in a statement that Winfrey embodies all the characteristics of the award, adding that for generations she has “celebrated strong female characters on and off screen, and has been a role model for women and young girls for decades.”

“As a global media leader, philanthropist, producer and actress, she has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world, making her one of the most respected and admired figures today,” Tatna said in December 2017.

Winfrey accepted the Cecile B. DeMille award with a speech that could best be described as “Presidential”.

“It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first Black woman to be given the same award,” she said. “It is an honour and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them”, Winfrey said.

“A new day is on the horizon, and when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure they become the leaders that take us to the time when nobody ever has to say #MeToo again”, she added.

Previous winners of the Cecil B DeMille award include Audrey Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Winfrey is the first black woman to ever receive the accolade.
