Victor Osimhen to Miss Napoli’s Upcoming Matches Due to Injury

22-year-old Victor James Osimhen who plays as a forward for the Super Eagles and Italian Serie A team Napoli suffered a serious head injury during the closing stages of the Italian side’s defeat against Bergamo-based Atalanta during a match played at the Gewiss Stadium. The injury was serious enough for the player to be immediately rushed to the hospital. To add insult to injury, Oshimen has just returned to the turf after another serious injury suffered in December when he suffered a dislocated shoulder during the Super Eagles’ match against the Sierra Leone national team.

Who is Victor Oshimen?

For those always keeping an eye on the odds over at Betway, the name Victor Oshimen likely sounds familiar: he is a presence that has the capability to always bend the odds in his team’s favour.

Born and raised in Lagos in a poor family with five siblings, young Victor started his “career” selling household supplies such as sachet water in the streets and playing football with the other kids at the Olusosun Primary School. Here, he was spotted by scouts from the Ultimate Strikers Academy who invited him for a trial.

From here, his career started curving upward – first, he became part of the Golden Eaglets, helping them qualify for the U17 FIFA World Cup held in Chile, and performed great at the event, winning the Golden Boot in the process. As you might expect, Oshimen was immediately spotted by scouts from major international teams, including several big names from the English Premier League. He chose to play with German Bundesliga team Wolfsburg, though, making his debut in Europe in 2017.

A history of injuries

Oshimen made his full Bundesliga debut in 2018 but was forced to end his season early because of a shoulder injury that had to be treated with surgery. He only played 12 games with Wolfsburg. Over the summer, he was infected with malaria that affected his physical fitness, making him unsuccessful in his appearances with the team. As a result, he was loaned to Belgian side Charleroi for a season that the two parties made permanent in 2019. He didn’t stay with the team for long, moving on to Ligue 1 team Lille later in the year. Here, he finished the season with 13 Ligue 1 goals in 25 matches, winning the Player of the Month for September 2019, scoring his first Champions League goal against Chelsea.
At the end of the season, Oshiment left France to play with Serie A team Napoli. He only left for an Africa Cup of Nations game against Sierra Leone where he got injured, needing surgery once again. While away from the turf, he was allowed to return to Nigeria where he had a chance to celebrate his birthday – but during the party, he contracted COVID-19. This, along with his shoulder injury, kept him sidelined until January 29 this year. But once again, his return was brief – a head injury suffered during Napoli’s match against Atalanta.
