380 LGAs in 35 States will Experience Flooding in 2018- NIHSA

A report on Thursday by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency- NIHSA, has revealed that a total of 380 Local Governments spread across 35 states of the Federation will experience flooding.

Speaking, NIHSA Acting Director General; Olayinka Ogunwale, also revealed that the level of flooding will not be as disturbing as that of year 2012, however, out of the 380 Local Governments, flooding will be severe in about 78 Local Governments across the states of the Federation.

The report showed that states like; Anambra, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Ondo, Yobe, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Borno, Kwara, Ekiti, Gombe, Plateau, Kaduna, among others.

While Benue, Anambra, Niger, Ogun, Osun, Cross River and Yobe states will likely experience river flooding, states like Bayelsa, Ondo, Rivers and Delta will likely have coastal flooding. Also Calabar, Ibadan, Yola, Abuja, Awka, Ado-Ekiti, Nsukka, Lokoja, Onitsha, Nyanya, Abaji, Abakaliki, Kano, Yanogoa, Lafia, Suleja, Portharcourt, Sokoto, Owerri, Oshogbo, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Ilorin, Makurdi and Lagos, will likely experience urban flood. This list is not exhaustive according to NIHSA because, many other cities with poor drainage will experience urban or flash flooding.

Reacting, the Minister of Water Resources; Suleiman Adamu regretted that both government agencies and communities have in the past, not taken the annual flood outlooks seriously, which has further intensified the demages done by flooding in Nigeria.
